Bibliography of Colon Classification 1930–1993. Edited by M.P. Satija and Amrik Singh. New Delhi: M.D. Publications, 1994. 129 p. ISBN 8–185–88029–8. $10.00.
S.R. Ranganathan (1892–1972) of India made a deep impact on international librarianship. His many contributions to the profession include the 1924 design of the Colon Classification, which has been used and/or studied in countries including India, China, Russia, Denmark, the former Yugoslavia, United Kingdom, and United States. Many articles and books have been published on this important classification system by respected librarians, library educators, and others.
M.P. Satija, a well–known library educator of India, has prepared a comprehensive bibliography on the topic. There are 1,350 entries in this book, arranged in chronological order beginning in 1930. The entries under each year have been arranged alphabetically under the last name of the author. Each entry includes full bibliographic information including author, title, place of publication, publisher, and date of publication. For journal articles, entries include author, title of the article, journal title, year of publication, volume number, and page numbers. The entries are not annotated. They have been collected from various sources, including bibliographies, books, journals, dissertations, conference papers, and chapters in books and encyclopedias published all over the world during the years 1930–1993. Books and articles on the Colon Classification written by S. R. Ranganathan have also been included. Over 98 percent of the entries are in the English language; a few represent other languages. It is the largest bibliography ever published on the Colon Classification, or any other classification used in libraries all over the world, for that matter.
The book has an author index, and a subject, form, and edition index. Both should be helpful to researchers. It is certainly an up–to–date bibliography on the Colon Classification, and an excellent addition to library literature. I recommend this book for all library school collections, as well as for students and scholars of library and information science.
