Abstract

This paper presents the state of government publications in Nigerian university libraries. It conceptualizes and attempts a typology of government publications. The article highlights and discusses the significant roles played by government publications in research, education and in the society in general. The problems encountered in the acquisition and classification of these publications are discussed, especially the inaccessibility of government publications, inadequate production of the National Bibliography of Nigeria, the lack of funds, and lack of bibliographic control. Suggestions are offered which might enhance the acquisition and processing of government publications in the Nigerian university libraries.
