Abstract

Examines the new standards laid down for library science education in Nigerian universities, concentrating on the curriculum section. The recommended curriculum is compared to the one in the IFLA Standards for Library Schools (1976) and found to be lacking in both core and specialized areas. The new Nigerian standards are designed for undergraduate programs in school librarianship, but this paper proposes modifications of it in order to accommodate other specializations, since these are the only official standards in Nigeria for library education. The adoption of the IFLA standards for library schools is proposed, along with the provision of a standardized postgraduate curriculum.
